Anti Smoking: Gone Too Far
By Barbara Woodcox

The Michigan employer who fired employees because they smoke facilitates the erosion of the personal freedom of Americans.

This employer not only banned smoking in the workplace, he fired people for smoking on their own time! It is frightening when employers can control the behavior of their workers when they are off the clock. Controlling workers' behavior on their own time is nothing short of slavery- the worker is under the employer's control and is not getting paid for it.

Employers do not own their workers and they shouldn't be able to control them when they are off the clock. If employers want to control their employees 24/7, then they should have to pay for it. For example, an employee who makes $9 per hour and works 40 hours per week gets $360 per week. Employers who want control 24/7 should have to pay the employee $1512 per week [(24 X 7) X $9=$1512].

This is not an issue about smoking. This is a matter of personal freedom in general. What comes next? Will overweight workers be given an ultimatum to lose weight or lose their jobs?

It's a free country? Not anymore!
