Drive the Speed
Limit
Speeding tickets are costly.
Plus, speeding wastes gas and costs you money. Gas mileage is
lower when you travel faster than 60 mph.
Maintain a constant
speed
Lots of accelerating and braking
will guzzle your gas and empty your wallet. If you have cruise
control, use it as much as possible.
Keep up on Vehicle
Maintenance
Well maintained cars get better
gas mileage so you'll save by servicing your car according to
schedule. Not to mention your car will last longer and be less
likely to break down.
Maintain the Correct Tire
Pressure
Low tire pressure reduces your
gas mileage. Check the pressure and have your tires rotated
regularly.
Buy Gas in the
Morning
Gasoline expands and contracts
according to temperature. If you buy gas when it's hotter
outside you will be paying for less gas and more
air.
Reduce the Weight Your
Car has to Bear
The more weight your car has to
carry, the more gas it will guzzle. Clear your trunk of golf
clubs, bowling balls, books, etc. when you don't need them.
Also, scrape all the snow and ice off your car in the winter.
They are surprisingly heavy.
Monitor Gas
Prices
Gas prices are fluctuating like
crazy. If you're on E and the prices are in the high range,
just get $5.00 worth. Fill up when gas prices are in the low
range.
Use The Air Conditioner
Sparingly
Only turn on the AC when it's too
hot to drive with the windows down. The AC system burns extra
gas. Exception: When traveling at high speeds, keep the
windows up to reduce wind resistance.
Take Advantage of Rewards
Programs
There are a lot of rewards
programs that reduce your fuel costs or help you get free
stuff. For example, Speedway gives rewards for Speedy Card
holders and free gas when you accumulate a certain number of
points. Kroger also has a gas savings advantage with the Plus
Card. Many credit card issuers have attractive rewards
programs than can earn you free gas, merchandise, and gift
cards.
